Learner Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify important factors of a team approach in the evaluation and management of children with cleft palate or velopharyngeal dysfunction disorders.
- Participants will be able to identify key aspects of the role of the speech – language pathologist (SLP) during the first two years of life in the child born with cleft palate.
- Participants will be able to describe misarticulations associated with cleft palate and velopharyngeal inadequacy, and techniques for treating cleft-type errors.
- Participants will be able to differentiate between developmental and physiological assessment of speech disorders related to cleft palate and/or velopharyngeal insufficiency.
- Participants will be able to describe speech disorders related to cleft palate and/or velopharyngeal insufficiency based on physiologic factors.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate management techniques for replacing compensatory articulation with articulation that is normal in both place and manner of production.
- Participants will be able to describe models of interaction between the team SLP and community SLP.
